    Organizational History

Acción Latina serves and empowers Latinos in San Francisco through civic engagement via community media and cultural arts programming. Their "cornerstone media project," El Tecolote newspaper, "began as a journalism project in a Raza Studies class at San Francisco State University under the direction of Professor Juan Gonzales. The class produced a bilingual Spanish/English newspaper, which they named El Tecolote (The Owl)." The newspaper moved to San Francisco's Mission District and became a training ground for Latinx journalists. It serves the community by covering issues ignored by the mainstream press. El Tecolote is primarily produced by volunteers.
Acción Latina produced the first Encuentro del Canto Popular in 1982. This three-day music festival highlights the musical genre of Nueva Canción from Latin America. In 1987, Acción Latina incorporated as a nonprofit, developed strategic plan, and hired its first executive director. They purchased a building in the heart of the Mission, on 24th Street, in 2000. The area was subsequently designated as the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District. The Juan R. Fuentes Gallery opened in 2015 to showcase art created by emerging and established Latinx artists.
This organizational history was taken from the Acción Latina website. For more information, see https://accionlatina.org/en/el-tecolote-newspaper/ and https://eltecolote.org/content/en/about-2/
