Scope and Content Note

Los Veteranos oral history project documents activism by Latinos in San Francisco's Mission District in the 1960s and 1970s. There are documents from the project and recordings with community activists, artists, musicians, etc. Administrative materials are arranged chronologically and interviewee files are arranged alphabetically. Please note that there are some grant files in Series 7.
Includes files re: and/or analog recordings with the following activists: Rosario Anaya; Chuck Ayala; Ray Balberan; Susan Cervantes; Margaret Cruz; Carlotta del Pertillo; Esperanza Echavarria; Juan Fuentes; Pete Gallegos; Bernardo Gonzales; Marcus Gordon; Roberto (Bob) Hernandez; Francisco Herrera; Yolando Lopez; Linda Lucero; Oscar Melara; Alejandro Murguia; and David Sanchez. There are some Born-digital recordings of these interviews, and they have been transferred to the Digital Collections Unit.

Series 2. Encuentro del Canto Popular (EDCP) 1981-2019

Files are arranged roughly chronologically or by year of the event.

Scope and Content Note

This series documents Encuentro de Canto Popular (EDCP), Acción Latina's annual concert, which started in 1982 as a fundraiser for El Tecolote. It celebrates nueva canción, Latin American music with a social justice message. EDCP brings artists from all over the world, but primarily across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States, to the San Francisco Bay Area.
The series includes administrative and financial records; audience/family surveys; contracts; correspondence; flyers, postcards, and programs; information about volunteers; materials re: the children's program and the Festival de los Rehiletes Musicales; newspaper clippings; notes; publicity and advertising files; and reports. Information about performers includes the artists promotional files', which contain photographs. Please note that financial and grant files may also be found in Series 6 and Series 7. Social Security numbers have been removed from documents.

Scope and Content Note

According to a mailer in the collection, the Bay Area Multicultural Telecommunications Association was a coalition of multiethnc media professionals and community-based activists. Their mission was to plan and implement a program of multicultural telecommunications and television services that included, served, and enriched the quality of life of the diverse communities and cultures of the Bay Area. One goal was to take over the operation of television station KMTP (Channel 32). This series contains materials realted to BAMTA's mission, and this goal.

Committee to Save KQED 1978-1980

Scope and Content Note

According to Committee records, Channel 32 was a subsidiary of KQED used "for replays, 'minority' programs and programs cosidered by KQED to have less audience appeal." The Committee to Save KQED tried to address what it referred to as "inconsistent" and "sporadic" programming and "to make the station more responsive to local community needs. These records document the committees efforts."
