Background
Since the early 1860s, The Manzanita Water Company distributed water for domestic,
manufacturing, and irrigation purposes. Their primary clients included Stanford University
and nearby organizations such as St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park. Notably, the company
was involved with the construction of the Searsville Dam in 1891 and a legal dispute with
the Bear Gulch Water Company over water rights in 1901. In the early 1900s, the Manzanita
Water Company changed its name to the Crystal Springs Water Company.
