files were prepared from selected Library originals by the Library Photographic Service. Library originals were copied onto
35mm color transparency film; the film was scanned and transferred to Kodak Photo CD (by Custom Process); and the Photo CD
files were color-corrected and saved in JFIF (JPEG) format for use as viewing files.

Scope and Content
The collection consists of 26 black and white photographs taken in Oakland, California by the Cheney Photo Advertising Company
circa 1930-1939. The views include the residences of Francis Marion Smith, founder of the Borax empire, and Joaquin Miller's
"Hights." Other views include the pergola and oak trees at Mosswood Park; residences on Linda Vista Terrace; Piedmont Park,
including the Art Gallery, outdoor landscapes, and various structures; an exterior view of the Great Western Power Station
in Oakland, a view of Oakland from the hills; the new City Hall; and a view of a private garden in Oakland. Views of the Oakland
Inner Harbor include a photograph of sailing ships in the docks, and two images of dredging. There are several images of Lake
Merritt, including the boat landing, boulevard, and surrounding residences. One photograph is of private grounds on East 14th
Street near Fruitvale Avenue, and one photograph is of bathers at the Alameda beach.
