Background
Scholar of religious history and chairman of the Dept. of Religious Studies, Stanford
University, from 1973 to 1980. Clebsch came to Stanford in 1963 from a series of ministerial
and theological seminary positions. He served as chairman of the new American Studies
Program (1975-1980) and was a leader in the improvement of graduate and undergraduate
programs in the humanities. Clebsch played a key role in faculty affairs throughout his
20-year career at Stanford. As deputy chairman (1968-1969) of the first faculty senate of
the Academic Council and as chairman (1969-1970) of the second, he set the pattern for
future operation of the Faculty Senate and he continued to serve in many capacities on
elected and appointed positions in the Faculty Senate and on University Committees.
