Abstract: Placed on permanent deposit in The Bancroft Library by the U.S. District Court, San Francisco. Maps show land grants (ranchos)
in California presented in evidence to the District Court. Dockets from which these maps were removed are in The Bancroft
Library Manuscript Division.

The Maps of Private Land Grant Cases of California were placed on permanent deposit in The Bancroft Library by the U.S. District
Court, San Francisco.

Processing History
The Land Case Maps were cataloged by the University of California during the California Maps Project from 1990 through 1993.
The project was funded by theDepartment of Education and the University of California, Berkeley. The bulk of the cataloging
was done by Randal Brandt.
The entire Land Case Maps collection was processed for digitization by Jeffrey Hookom. The digitization was carried out by
the Digital Imaging Lab at UC Berkeley. The Land Case Maps Digital Archive project was managed by Mary W. Elings.
Administrative History
The maps, or diseños, that comprise the Land Case Maps collection originally formed part of the private land claims ajudicated
by the U.S. District Courts of California (Northern and Southern Districts) and the U.S Circuit Court (9th Circuit) from ca.
1850 to 1860. The records of the private land claim cases, along with the maps, were held by the U.S. District Court, San
Francisco until 1951 when they were transferred to The Bancroft Library.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Land Case maps collection comprises maps found in private land claim cases in the U.S. Northern and Southern District
Courts. The maps were created to establish ownership of the land represented. The maps show property boundaries, any buildings,and
natural features. The maps cover a period from approximately 1850 to approximately 1890.
