Biographical / Historical
Hiram Farrand, resident of Newark, New Jersey, enrolled in Company F of the 1st New York Volunteer Engineers Regiment in September
1861. In October he was commissioned the 2nd Lieutenant, and in February 1862 promoted to First Lieutenant of Company E. In
December 1863 he was appointed acting regimental adjutant. In March 1864, Farrand was commissioned Captain of Company D. During
his service, he took part in battles of Hilton Head, Secessionville, Coosawhatchie River, Carlton and Frampton Plantations,
Morris Island, the siege of Battery Wagner, Charleston, and Fort Sumter. Wounded during the action at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia,
he spent a month at the General Hospital in Chesapeake in 1864. He was mustered out on December 12, 1864, in Varina, Virginia.
Scope and Contents
Letters from Hiram Farrand to his brother Samuel Ashbel Farrand, member of the Newark Board of Education and Professor of
the Newark Academy, posted from various places in South Carolina, Florida, and Virginia. Some letters were written on board
the steamers the "Star of the South" and the "Burnside," including one written in a Miner's and Traveler's Letter Book, 1850.
Letters cover operations in Virginia and South Carolina, including naval battles and war politics; camp life, payments, procurement,
promotions, diseases, and recreations (including a course of Shakespeare lectures taught in camp by the Reverend Henry Norman
Hudson, then the Regiment's chaplain). Also included is a journal of a Newark delegate of the United States Christian Commission
to the Gettysburg battlefield.
