    Historical or Biographical Note

Louis Lorenz Stein, Jr. was born on August 21, 1902, in Berkeley, California. He earned a degree from the University of California School of Pharmacy in 1924, and opened a pharmacy in Kensington, California, in 1928. His passion for history led to a lifetime of collecting material related to railroads and local history, including photographs, documents, artifacts, ephemera, and more.
His collection of pharmaceutical items served as the basis for the historic drugstore at Columbia State Historic Park, and, in 1953, he purchased the Martinez Adobe to save it from destruction. Parts of his collection can be found in various other Northern California museums and historical societies, including the California State Railroad Museum and the Contra Costa County Historical Society.
Louis Stein married Mildred Slater (1903-1989) in 1927. They had two children, Robert and Janet. Louis Stein died on November 11, 1996.
