Biography/Administrative History
Born in Saratoga, Wyoming, Philip A. Munz (1892-1974) was an American botanist, educator, administrator, and author. Although
he was trained as an entomologist, Munz learned botany while teaching at Pomona College in Claremont, California beginning
in 1917. After a short stint as professor of botany at Cornell University, Munz returned to Southern California to become
director of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (California Botanic Garden) in 1946, where he remained until his retirement in
1960. In addition to publishing monographs on Onagraceae and Delphinium, Munz was the author of A Manual of Southern California
Botany (1935), A California Flora (1963), A Flora of Southern California (1974), and four popular plant guides for general
readers known as the California Wildflower Books.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection consists of original black-and-white botanical illustrations used in multiple books on the flora of California
authored by Philip A. Munz, including A Manual of Southern California Botany (1935), A California Flora (1959), California
Spring Wildflowers (1961), California Desert Wildflowers (1962), California Mountain Wildflowers (1963), Shore Wildflowers
of California, Oregon, and Washington (1964), and A Flora of Southern California (1974). Illustrators include Dick Beasley,
Thomas Craig, Rodman Cross, Jeanne R. Janish, Shue-Huei Liao, Richard J. Shaw, Stephen Tillett, Milford Zornes, and some unknown
artists. Most sets of illustrations are incomplete.
