Biography/Administrative History
The Horizons Foundation was founded in 1980 as the grantmaking arm of the Golden Gate Business Association (GGBA), and has
provided grants to support the San Francisco Bay Area LGBTQIA+ community for more than forty years. Horizons took its current
name in 1988, and in 1999 achieved the goal of providing a million dollars of yearly grantmaking. It was the first foundation
in the United States to make a grant to an AIDS service provider -- a 1982 grant to the Kaposi’s Sarcoma Research and Education
Foundation, later known as the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Horizons also sponsored the first Gay Games.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection is broken into five series: Grant Materials, Administrative Records, Publications, Audiovisual Materialsm and
Artifacts. Grant Materials contains documentation of the Horizons Foundation’s grants, including applications, letters, and
related materials from a wide variety of organizations and projects over nearly twenty years. Administrative Records contains
a variety of materials, including development and communications documents, surveys and studies, board materials, subject
files, grant rating materials, and a significant amount of material on Horizons’ Technical Assistance Program (TAP). Publications
contains miscellaneous internal and external publications, most of them apparently grant deliverables. Audiovisual Materials
also consists mostly of grant deliverables, including videotapes, audio cassettes, and DVDs. Artifacts contains various artifacts,
such as a parade banner and metal bookmarks.
