Abstract: The personal papers of April Martin Chartrand, a Black queer researcher, artist, and counselor who co-founded the Bay Area
Women of Color Photo Project. The material includes binders of Chartrand’s research and advocacy papers, especially those
created during her master’s studies at San Francisco State University, and materials related to Chartrand’s book, “Angel’s
Destiny: A Novel Story of Poems and Illustrations”; and various other personal papers and a flash drive.

Scope and Content of Collection
The personal papers of April Martin Chartrand, a Black queer researcher, artist, and counselor who co-founded the Bay Area
Women of Color Photo Project. The material includes binders of Chartrand’s research and advocacy papers, especially those
created during her master’s studies at San Francisco State University, including: “Potty Training: All Bodies Welcome, Gender
Neutral Restrooms for the Rest of Us! Transgender Barriers to Employment at San Francisco State University”; “Chartrand’s
Artistry of Reframing a New You Theory”; “Utilizing Dr. Janet Helms’ White Racial Identity Development Model as Counselors
of Color: Supporting White Students”; “Resiliency Project”; “Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald: The Rosenwald Schools”;
“Racial Microaggressions in Everyday Life”; “The Case of Ms. X: Subcultured, Racialized, and Marginalized, The Thing That
Binds You, LGBTQQII Women of Color”; and “Thesis: A Cultural Humility Approach to Digital Storytelling for First-Generation
College Students”. Also included are materials related to Chartrand’s book, “Angel’s Destiny: A Novel Story of Poems and Illustrations”;
“A Sacred Beautiful: Natural Heritage Hair, An African Diasporan Photo Expose”; and various other personal papers and a flash
drive with interviews of Chartrand and one of her art installations.
