    Biographical / Historical

Thomas Truxtun (1755-1822) was an American naval officer who distinguished himself during the Revolutionary War and the Quasi War with France. In 1795, he was involved in a failed shipping contract with the French envoy, which resulted in substantial losses to Truxtun. After the U.S. government assumed responsibility for such losses (known as French Spoliation Claims) by a Congressional Act of 1885, Truxtun's heirs revived the case through the U.S. Court of Claims.

    Scope and Contents

Letters and papers exchanged between the various Truxtun heirs regarding their case. Included is genealogical data of the Truxtun, Houston, Van Drieull, Eastman, and Talbot families, along with Truxton's will and relevant biographical data.
