Abstract: This collection of Kimball documents includes: house papers from residences on Howard Street, a journal of daily life from
1840, a journal of daily life from 1851-1873, citizenship paperwork, a tenant’s agreement form, a deed from Harvey T.(?) Brown
and Eugene Cazalis to Charles P. Kimball, real estate tax forms, handwritten drafts of newspaper articles, newspaper clippings,
an extract from Kimball’s diary regarding the first San Francisco Directory, Kimball Family Newspapers, sketches of Howard
Street property, calling cards with the names Rebecca M. Kimball and Mrs. Chas. P. Kimball, a relief fund certificate for
one thousand dollars made out to Rebecca Kimball from 1883, a journal of daily life from 1847 to 1857 (some entries out of
order), a map of Maine and surrounding area, a letter dated 1850 from F. Gleason to Kimball regarding the sale of 50, 25 and
12.5 cent books, and a handwritten note entitled “A Home made [sic] Valentine written in Maine, I think, and sent to Chas.
P. Kimball about 1850.”

Biographical/Historical note
Charles P. Kimball was born 07/11/1821 in Bangor, Maine. His journey to California took place aboard the “Boston” and arrived
in San Francisco 07/06/1849. In San Francisco he ran a ship “The Noisy Carrier Publishing Hall”, located on the Long Wharf
in San Francisco, which had the largest variety of out of town papers in the city. He became a member of the Vigilance Committee,
The Society of California Pioneers, the Mechanics' Institute, and Yerba Buena Lodge, No. 15, I.O.O.F.. He was also the owner
of "The Noisy Carrier Book and Stationery Co." He was the publisher of the first San Francisco Directory in 1850.

- Gilmore Festival Concert" Nov. 11-14, no year given.
Folder 5: Volume 6 of Journal Journal Includes: 05/28/1851-11/23/1873. Daily Life, Business interests and dealings. Newspaper
articles (mostly fromthe 1910's regarding World War I, specifically about Belgium).
Folder 6: Volume 5 of Journal Journal Includes: 01/27/1847-05/15/1857. Notes on his daily activities notes on the weather
and on news of his friends and relatives. Entries in San Francisco detail mining activities and daily life. Continuation of
efforts to publish the first San Francisco Directory. 12/31/1848: Entry in journal describes agreement to go to California.
01/25/1849: Entry on ship rules on the 1st day of sailing. 07/06/1849: Details on arrival in San Francisco. 12/10/1849: Peddling
license for City of San Francisco.
Folder 7: Maine Papers "Map of the Varmouth S.S. Co. Limited" - map of New England showing railroad routes, undated. Letter
dated 09/07/1850 from F. Gleason (Tremont St., Boston) to Kimball regarding the sale of 50, 25 and 12.5 cent books. Handwritten
