    Biographical / Historical

    Theodore Van Soelen (1890-1964) was born in Minnesota and studied art at St. Paul Institute from 1908 to 1911. Van Soelen began his career as an artist in 1916 and was the recipient of numerous prizes. He went to New Mexico for his health, settled near Santa Fe, and specialized in the portrayal of Western life. His paintings and lithographic prints are in many important collections, including the Library of Congress.

    Scope and Contents

    The collection consists of 180 letters from 1950 to 1963, from more than eighty persons to Theodore Van Soelen. The letters are from artists, writers, and prominent men in public life; the subject matter focuses on art, New Mexico government, and politics. Correspondents include: Paul Horgan, Peter Hurd, Tom Lea, Paul Manship, Edwin L. Mechem, Nicholas Roosevelt, Paul Sample, Allan Shivers, John F. Simms, Edward Streeter, Robert Lewis Taylor, and Paul Dudley White.
