Abstract:
This collection contains papers of Paul C. Hutchison (1924-1997), a senior botanist at the University of California at Berkeley who specialized in cacti, chiefly consisting of Hutchison’s personal collection of the journals and correspondence of English streetcar operator and amateur cactus botanist John Thomas Bates (1849-1934). There are several botanical notebooks and catalogues belonging to Hutchison and Bates.

Scope and content:

This collection contains papers of Paul C. Hutchison (1924-1997), a senior botanist at the University of California at Berkeley. The lion’s share of the collection consists of Hutchison’s personal collection of the journals and correspondence of English streetcar operator and amateur cactus botanist John Thomas Bates. There are several botanical notebooks and catalogues belonging to Hutchison and Bates. Two of Bates’ notebooks contain extensive notes on English botanist Nicholas Edward Brown (1849-1934). The collection also includes two botanical essays by botanist Paul Hutchison on the species of cacti in which he specialized, as well as a few of his letters to and from other prominent botanists. There is also a 1952 bound report collected by Hutchison on the horticultural and agricultural conditions of the Caribbean island of St. Croix (Box 2, Folder 8). Two of the notebooks are oversize. There are also 24 items of ephemera including a botanical catalogue, miscellaneous ledgers, invoices, photographs, a scrapbook and taxonomic notes.

Biographical / historical:

A senior botanist at the University of California at Berkeley, Paul Clifford Hutchison (1924-1997) traveled great distances from his California home in search of new plant species. Born in 1924, Hutchison specialized in cactus plant species, and took a great interest in the work of other botanists doing similar work. He took trips to the Caribbean in 1951 and Bolivia and Peru in 1964 to research South American cacti species. Hutchison died in 1997.
