Biography/Administrative History
Barbara Grier was a writer, editor, and publisher of articles and books on lesbians and lesbianism. She and her life partner
Donna McBride, a librarian, were two of the four founders of Naiad Press, a lesbian publishing house.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection is a mixture of corporate archives and personal papers. The collection contains materials which document Grier's
and McBride’s lives, especially their work with Anyda Marchant (a.k.a. Sarah Aldridge) and her life partner Muriel Crawford
to establish Naiad Press. The Naiad authors include Marion Zimmer Bradley, May Sarton, Elsa Gidlow, Jeannette Foster, Jane
Rule, Valerie Taylor and Sheila Ortiz Taylor. There is excellent coverage of the media frenzy which accompanied publication
of "Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence," edited by Rosemary Curb and Nancy Manahan. Of particular interest is the correspondence
with Canadian author Jane Rule, and with Joanne Passet, Grier's biographer.
