Historical Note
The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a grassroots nonpartisan political organization
encouraging the informed and active participation of citizens in government, and operating
at the local, regional, state and national levels. It was founded in 1920. The League of
Women Voters of Glendale/Burbank (LWVGB) was one of the local leagues that comprised the
regional League of Women Voters of Los Angeles County (LWVLAC). The members of the
Glendale/Burbank chapter were also members of the of the leagues that operated in the
hierarchy above them: the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles County, the League of Women
Voters of California, and the League of Women Voters of the United States. The League of
Women Voters of Glendale was established in 1941. In 1988 the League of Women Voters of
Glendale changed it's named to the League of Women Voters of Glendale/Burbank. Then, in 2020
The League of Women Voters Glendale/Burbank dissolved as a separate corporation and merged
into the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles (LWVLA).
Originally founded for and by women, the League now serves and is made up of both men and
women. League members participate in voter service, publish election guides, present
candidate forums that are often televised, run voter registration drives, manage local
elections, and take action and advocate on social and government issues. The
Glendale/Burbank League long worked to educate the public on a number of important national
issues, including child abuse, childcare, criminal justice, education, homelessness,
immigration and welfare reform, and public health, among others. The chapter also focused on
a number of local issues, including support for the creation of the Verdugo Mountains Open
Space Preserve, which had originally been designated for a housing development; changing the
number of signatures necessary to run for office in Glendale from 500 to 100; an evaluation
of the mental health programs in Glendale; and encouraging the use of the Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design rating system for new city projects in Glendale. The League
conducted studies around such issues in order to formulate their positions and advocate for
change. The LWVGB operated with an executive board. The members signed up for committees
including finance committee, membership committee, program committee, voter service
committee, and committees to run specific studies such as child care committee, housing and
homeless committee, mental health committee, and more.
