Abstract: This collection includes correspondence, publications, fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, speech transcripts, photographs,
videos, video logs, audio cassettes, and other material. Loda Mae Davis (1898-1989) was the first Dean of Women at the University
of California, Riverside when it opened in 1954. The entire collection was for the Loda Mae Davis Women's Archive. The first
part of the collection describes Davis' papers and the rest of the collection documents the life and work of female faculty
members who contributed to the UCR academic community. Each file includes an oral history interview and supporting material.

Processing of the Loda Mae Davis papers was completed by undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside
as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project started in 2015. This project was funded
by the UCR Library and administered by Andrew Lippert, Special Collections Processing Archivist.
Biographical Note
Loda Mae Davis (1898-1989) was born in Washington State to homesteaders in 1898. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1923 and
continued on to obtain a Master's of Science in Business in 1932. She continued to study at Berkeley as a graduate student
in Psychology. During the Great Depression she traveled the world for several years before returning to the United States
and joining the Works Project Administration. She spent well over a decade working for the US Government or as a consultant.
Davis joined the new University of California, Riverside faculty in 1953 as the Dean of Women and also served as an Associate
Dean of Students during her over ten years at UCR. She remained a part of the UCR community after her retirement, helping
to found the Loda Mae Davis Archive and serve as a mentor to women in academia.
Collection Scope and Contents
This collection includes correspondence, publications, fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, speech transcripts, photographs,
videos, video logs, audio cassettes, and other material. Loda Mae Davis (1898-1989) was the first Dean of Women at the University
of California, Riverside when it opened in 1954. Davis earned an undergraduate degree in commerce (1923) and a graduate degree
in business (1932) at UC Berkeley. An economic analyst, consumer rights advocate, and world traveler, she worked for the WPA
and other Federal entities during the Roosevelt administration, then for the UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration following
World War II. She also completed graduate work in psychology at University of California, Berkeley (UCB) prior to her appointment
as Dean at UCR. Included are Davis' personal and professional papers and an oral history interview. The rest of the collection
documents the life and work of female faculty members who made notable contributions to the UCR academic community. Each
file includes an oral history interview, and supporting material
