Papers and addenda belonging to Anita
May Baldwin, daughter of Elias "Lucky" Baldwin, and the Santa Anita Rancho.
Background
Anita M. Baldwin (1876-1939) was the daughter of Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin (1828-1909)
who was a millionaire investor in Comstock mining stocks; he was later the developer of the
Santa Anita Rancho, which he bought from Harris Newmark in 1875. At the age of 16, Anita May
Baldwin married a cousin George Baldwin (this marriage was annulled); she later married Hull
McClaughry and they had a son: Baldwin McClaughry Baldwin. This marriage ended in divorce,
and she legally reverted to the name Anita M. Baldwin. After E. J. Baldwin's death, Anita
Baldwin inherited the ranch which included vineyards, orchards, livestock, and racehorses;
she continued to run the ranch until selling several acres to the Los Angeles Turf Club in
1933 and most of the remaining acreage for subdivision in 1936.
