Background

Scope and content:

This collection primarily contains memoirs written by United States Congressman and Civil War officer Lionel Allen Sheldon (1828-1917) about men he knew, specifically generals and politicians during the Civil War period. Some of these memoirs are part of his larger work Reminiscence of Men and Events, which appear to be unpublished. There are a few pieces of correspondence and ephemera following the manuscripts.

Note: Autograph corrections appear throughout the collection, possibly done by Lionel A. Sheldon.

Biographical / historical:

Lionel Allen Sheldon (1831-1917) was United States Representative from Louisiana. He was Governor of New Mexico Territory from 1881 to 1885. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was appointed lieutenant colonel of the Forty-second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, November 27, 1861, and promoted to the rank of colonel March 14, 1862. He settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, and practiced law from 1864 to 1879. He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1888 and engaged in the practice of law. He moved to Pasadena, California, and died in that city on January 17, 1917. The Ohio Infantry Regiment, 42nd organized at Camp Chase, Columbus Ohio, September to November 1861. Moved to Catlettsburg, Ky., December 14, 1861; thence to Louisa, Ky. Attached to 18th Brigade, Army of the Ohio, to March, 1862. 26th Brigade, 7th Division, Army of the Ohio, to October, 1862. 4th Brigade, Cumberland Division, District of West Virginia, Dept. of the Ohio, to November, 1862. 3rd Brigade, 9th Division, Right Wing 13th Army Corps (Old), Dept. of the Tennessee, to December, 1862. 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, Sherman's Yazoo Expedition, to January, 1863. 3rd Brigade, 9th Division, 13th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, to February, 1863. 2nd Brigade, 9th Division, 13th Army Corps, to July, 1863. 4th Brigade, 1st Division, 13th Army Corps, Dept. of the Tennessee, to August, 1863, and Dept., of the Gulf to September, 1863. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 13th Army Corps, Dept. of the Gulf, to November, 1863.
