Description
Haviside Company records (SAFR 17401, HDC 265) consists of five order books that list when and what repairs were done on various
vessels and one scrapbook containing mostly newsclippings and some personal items from H.T. and J.J. Haviside. These materials
date from 1908 to 1954. The Haviside Company was involved in sail-making and ship chandlery. One of the order books lists
an order for a hatch cover for the C.A. THAYER. The collection is available for research use without restriction.
Background
The company was founded in 1879 by J.J. Haviside. Originally, the firm's business was confined to rigging, caulking, ship
reconditioning, etc. and had almost exclusive control over this business in San Francisco. Expanding in the late 1920s, the
firm, by 1930, included a ship chandlery and supplies division, rigging and sail-making division, and a derek barge and salvaging
division.
