Biographical / Historical Note
The album was assembled by an unidentified French couple (known only as "Charles et moi"), who toured northern Algeria in
1897.
Scope and Content of Collection
The album of 39 albumen photographs chronicles a French couple's tour through northern Algeria on horseback in May and June
of 1897. Among the
locations documented are Constantine, Touggourt, Fort National, Kabylia, and Port de Bougie (Bejaïa). The Roman ruins at Timgad
(Thamugadi), including
the arch, the theater, and the forum, are also represented. There are views of natural landscapes, including the Rummel and
Tilatou rivers, a few of
which include images of one or both of the tourists. A few photographs depict Algerians in native dress.
The photograph captions are written in a single hand, as is some ecstatic commentary on the pages containing no image.
The album is bound in green morocco leather with decorative gold stamping and the initial "P" in center of front cover. The
slipcase is covered with
black and orange marbled paper.
Captions are written in French on the mounts below the images; these have been used as titles for the photographs.
