The major portion of the D. H. Lawrence Collection was purchased by the University of California Library from the estate of Frieda Lawrence Ravagli, his widow, in 1957. A few items have been added by purchase and by gift; the sources for these are noted on the folders.
The collection includes letters written by Lawrence and a few addressed to him; MSS of his writings (novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, introductions to books, travel sketches, translations and book reviews); an autobiographical fragment; clippings and reprints of articles, stories, etc. written by Lawrence; clippings of articles re Lawrence, his books, and books about him; his address book and other miscellaneous items; transcripts of proceedings in an English court case, 1960, involving publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover; letters of condolence addressed to Frieda Lawrence; MS copy of E. W. Tedlock's D. H. Lawrence Manuscripts: A Descriptive Bibliography.
