The current arrangement reflects two periods of collection processing within the library. The first group (items :1-:165) was initially received in 1978. It was roughly arranged by library staff in two groups: subjects and portraits.
When additions (items :166 -:302) were transferred from the organizational records in 2002-2003, new material was appended and arranged by library staff with no attempt to renumber or rearrange the items from the first group. Captions were also provided by library staff, and were derived from accompanying manuscripts, information written on backs of images, and the images themselves. In an effort to streamline processing, the physical description only includes "1 photographic print."
The first batch is arranged in two groups: subjects (items :1-: 60) and portraits (items :61-:165).
The additions are arranged in four groups: portraits; branches; programs and projects; and other organizations and miscellany.
Portraits (items :166 -:211)
Photographs of identified people, arranged alphabetically by last name. The majority of images are formal portraits. Regional or National Office level status is given when known.Branches (items :212 -:245)
Images that were pulled from the branch files of the Regional 1Office. These photographs are arranged alphabetically by state, then by city, and include shots of branch programs and events.Programs and projects (items :246 -:282)
Images related to programs administered or created by the Region 1or National Office, such as labor, fund raising, voter registration, membership, and education as well as conferences and conventions. Photographs are arranged roughly subject, then by date.Other organizations and miscellany (items :283 -:302)
Collected material and unidentified subjects arranged alphabetically (roughly) by organization or last name of individual. Included are photographs from organizations NAACP had an interest in, or from people asking for NAACP's support. A miscellany, at the end of this group, consists of unidentified photographs that may or may not be directly related to the NAACP. - Biographical / historical:
