Scope and content:

The Arthur P. Jacobs Collection includes files from his publicity firm (15 linear feet); production files from his motion pictures (65 linear feet); art work; photographs; sound recordings; books; and other memorabilia.

Biographical / historical:

Arthur P. Jacobs was born in Los Angeles in 1922 and attended the University of Southern California, beginning his motion picture career as a messenger at MGM. He became a publicist at that studio, at Warner Brothers and then as the head of his own firm. Clients included Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck, James Stewart and the Principality of Monaco. In the mid-1960s Jacobs launched a successful career as an independent producer. He is probably best known for the Planet of the Apes series (1968-73), but he also produced several successful films. A short list of titles includes What a Way to Go! (1964); Doctor Doolittle (1967); The Chairman (1969); Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969); Play It Again, Sam (1970); Tom Sawyer (1973) and Huckleberry Finn (1974). Jacobs died in 1973.
