Consists of personal papers, photographs, artifacts, audiovisuals, textiles, books, posters, ephemera, and memorabilia collected by Wayne R. Hultgren during his lifetime and involvement with public transportation.

There are eleven main series pertaining to the Wayne R. Hultgren papers consisting of Biographical; Modern Transit Society; Sacramento Regional Transit District; Environmental Council of Sacramento; Northeast Transportation Task Force; Sacramento Transportation Coalition; Light Rail Transit Advocates; Sacramento Transit Development Agency; Organizations; Publications; and Painting(s).

In particular, this collection derives from Hultgren's files which focus heavily on his involvement with the Modern Transit Society.

Biographical / historical:

Wayne R. Hultgren was a leading advocate who played an instrumental role during the grass-roots campaign to establish light rail public transportation in Sacramento, which commenced in September 1987. Born on 14 September 1918, Wayne Hultgren was raised in Minnesota, and enlisted in the United States Navy. Having fought in World War II and been discharged with honor, he settled with his wife Ruth and raised three children in Alameda, California. He worked as a carpenter, as a teacher and as a title insurance examiner before retiring at the age of 55 years and moving to Sacramento for his wife's career. At Sacramento, he became involved in organizations' efforts to introduce light rail public transportation, and occupied the following positions:

Member of Modern Transit Society, Santa Clara County, California: 1969-1973.

Transportation Committee Chair of Environmental Council of Sacramento: 1974.

Program Committee Chair of Modern Transit Society of Sacramento: 1975.

President of Modern Transit Society of Sacramento: 1976-1980.

Member of Northeast Transportation Task Force: 1976-1980.

Member of Citizen's Advisory Committee to Regional Transit District General Plan: 1978-1979.

Light Rail Transit Advocates.

Community Honors:

Environmentalist of the Year - Environmental Council of Sacramento: 1979.

California State Senate Rules Committee Resolution of Commendation: 1979.

Clean Air Award - American Lung Association: 1989.

Acquisition information:
The Wayne Hultgren papers were given to the CSUS Special Collections and University Archives by Ruth Hultgren in 2002.
Custodial history:

Wayne Hultgren assembled these papers over many years as part of his effort to promote better transportation in the Sacramento area.
