Scope and content:

A collection of microfilmed documents relating to the history of the Order of Saint Francis in the New World, including the exploration, settlement, and colonization of Mexico, Central, and South America, the Caribbean, and the United States. Almost all of the materials are copies of documents held in libraries and archives in Spain, Italy, and the Americas. In addition to records detailing Franciscan missions, policies, and practices, the collection includes letters and diaries of explorers and missionaries, regional histories, and two-way dictionaries of Spanish and indigenous languages. Authors include Caetano Baluffi, Fray Juan Crespi, Marion Habig, Fr. Mathias Keimen, Jay Frederick Lehnhertz, Fr. Junipero Serra, and Fr. Pedro TomΓ‘s Torrubia.

Biographical / historical:

The Franciscan Order is the common term for the Order of Friars Minor; the Order of Friars Minor, Capuchin; the Order of Friars Minor, Conventual; the Third Order Regular of St. Francis; and a number of other related communities of men or women. Originally founded by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1209, the Order is mendicant (dependent on charity for their livelihood), apostolic, and contemplative.

The Academy of American Franciscan History Microfilm Collection was loaned to The Bancroft Library from the Academy of American Franciscan History, Inc. on February 23, 2005.
