Background
- Scope and content:
-
The University Archives Photographs collection is comprised of photographs culled from other collections in the University Archives. The photographs from various collections are stored together in order to provide improved archival storage and easier retrieval. Most of the photographs were donated by the Office of Public Affairs. Older photographs were donated by Hazel Severy, Ednah Rich Morse, and Anna Blake. The dates of the photographs range from the 1890s to the present, with the majority being black and white photos from the 1920s and 1950s. The subjects covered include all aspects of the UCSB campuses and academic and student life.
The collection is arranged in the following series:
Series I: Photographs. The photographs listed here are all prints. Negatives are available for about ten percent of the collection and they are stored in the vault (see Series III). Most of the photos from the 1960s through the present have negatives in the Photography Department at Learning Resources. This series is divided into the following subseries: Antecedents; Riviera Campus; Mesa Campus; Goleta Campus, which contains many photos of departments, buildings, faculty, staff, and students, events, and the library; and Oversize Photographs.
Series II: Slides. Contains slides of similar subjects found in the photographs series. This series is divided into the following subseries: Campus and Buildings, Departments and Offices, Campus-wide Events, Library, and Students.
Series III: Negatives. Contains negatives for some of the photographs in Series I and one glass negative. Stored in Vault.
