The collection offers historical interpretation of Monterey County and its role in California history. Digitized images in the collection include photographs, postcards, and documents of people, places, and buildings including libraries and librarians, schools, missions, industries (whaling, salt, and agricultural) in Aromas, Big Sur, Carmel, Gonzales, Jolon, Monterey, Moss Landing, Seaside, Pacific Grove, Salinas, Seaside, Soledad, Spreckles, and more. Format is primarily black-and-white photographs and documents, with color photographs of the farm labor camps. The photographs document life and industry in early Monterey County. Slevin showing the lifestyle, buildings, and people of the Monterey County area in the early 1900s, early Monterey County Free Libraries history and service by horseback, and Monterey County farm labor camps from the 1960s era.
Items were selected from a wide range of photograph collections housed at the Monterey County Free Libraries' Administrative Office and the Aromas Branch of Monterey County Free Libraries. The photos are indexed on a database at the administrative offices. Consult the library for more information.
