Abstract:
The UCSB Office of Facilities Management records contain correspondence, maps, surveys, easements, deeds, lease agreements, photographs, meeting minutes and construction and planning documents pertaining to the facilities development of the University of California, Santa Barbara, focusing on its current Goleta location. Many of the documents pertain to the establishment of roads (in particular, Storke, Los Carneros and El Colegio), sewage lines and other utilities. Another portion of the documents pertain to land acquisitions which resulted in the establishment and maintenance of the Goleta campus, the Devereux Center, and the Isla Vista Sanitary District.

Scope and content:

Both series contain correspondence, maps, surveys, easements, deeds, lease agreements, photographs, meeting minutes and construction and planning documents pertaining to the facilities development of the University of California, Santa Barbara, focusing on its current Goleta location. Many of the documents pertain to the establishment of roads (in particular, Storke, Los Carneros and El Colegio), sewage lines and other utilities. Another portion of the documents pertain to land acquisitions which resulted in the establishment and maintenance of the Goleta campus, the Devereux Center, and the Isla Vista Sanitary District.

Many of the deeds, easements and other legal documents are also filed with the Santa Barbara County Clerk-Recorder's Office and exist in these records as copies. These documents are identified by the abbreviation O.R (Official Record), and are further divided by Book and Page Number. For example, 1389/475 O.R. pertains to Official Record, Book 1389, Page 475.

The files, as originally received, are designated as General Files and Fred Gillard's Files. The titles from each folder are taken from the title included on each folder. In the event that a folder did not contain a title, a title was assigned and given in brackets. Due to its smaller size, the folders in the General Files are arranged alphabetically by title.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into the following series:

I. GENERAL FILES, 1948-1998: Arranged alphabetically by folder title.

II. FRED GILLARD'S FILES, 1874-1989: This series is arranged in the exact order as it was received from the Office of Facilities Management.

Fred Gillard was the Associate Civil Engineer for the Office of Facilities Management. The files are limited to records of the Office of Facilities Management. There is no personal material from Fred Gillard located in these files.

Biographical / historical:

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) began as Santa Barbara State College, and was converted to Santa Barbara College of the University of California during World War II. Thomas M. Storke, publisher of the Santa Barbara News-Press, was a dominant advocate for the transition from state college to university status. The original campus location was situated on land previously occupied by Santa Barbara Junior College, situated on the mesa site. Additional land was located in an area known as the "Riviera" site.

In 1949, the entire campus moved to its current site in Goleta, previously occupied by a Marine Air Corps Station. The land offered 400 acres of "improvements that included miles of paved road, a water system, a sewage disposal plant and seventy-five other buildings, some of which could be used as temporary classrooms, dormitories, dining halls, and recreation facilities (p. 348)." Obtaining the land from the War Assets Administration could be done for no cost because the land would be used for educational purposes. The Marine station was previously the Bishop Den Ranch, part of the Rancho Los Dos Pueblos. In 1958, the name was officially changed to University of California, Santa Barbara. The adjacent student community of Isla Vista was formed in 1954.
