Background

Scope and content:

The Cleveland Glover Papers include photographs, certificates, newspaper clippings, and a funeral program that document the life and activities of photographer Cleveland Glover. The bulk of the papers are photographs taken by Glover while serving in the U.S. Army in the 1950s-1960s. The photographs are arranged into four subseries: Korean War, Presidio of Monterey, Oakland Unified School District, and Assorted. The Korean War series includes photographs of Korean and military life in and around Taegu, Korea while Glover was stationed in Korea during the war. Photographs include Korean city street scenes and rural village life, military activities and social life on base, and a large collection of various USO performers entertaining troops, including several images of Marilyn Monroe’s USO tour of Korea.

The Presidio of Monterey subseries includes photographs taken around 1960 documenting the social life and military life at the US Army installation at the Presidio of Monterey. A majority of the photographs are of army weddings and various social events on base. Photographs also document a Chinese cultural event at the Pacific Grove Post Office building, a street parade, and choir singing engagements, and informal portraits of a number of military service members.

The biographical series includes various certificates awarded to Cleveland Glover by the Small Business Administration, assorted newspaper clippings documenting Glover’s career, and a program from Cleveland Glover’s funeral service.

Biographical / historical:

Photographer Cleveland Glover (1922-1995) was born on August 22, 1922 in Savannah, Georgia to Freddie and Susie Glover. After attending school in Savannah, Glover joined the U.S. Army and served as an Army photographer and film projectionist during World War II and the Korean War. He would eventually rise to the rank of Master Sargent and was the African American photographer assigned to the West Point Academy and was General Maxwell D. Taylor’s official photographer.

Following his retirement from the military after 22 years of military service, Glover worked as a staff photographer for the Post Newspaper Group beginning the 1960s. He served as a staff photographer for over 25 years while also working as a staff photographer for the Oakland Unified School District in the Publications and Public Information Department until his retirement in 1989.
