Biographical / historical:

John G. North was born Johan Gurenius Nordtvedt in Norway December 15, 1826 and came to California in 1849 by ship. He lived primarily in San Francisco and was a shipbuilder. He opened North's Shipyard in San Francisco's Potrero District in 1860 and is credited with constructing some 236 hulls including the steamers Chrysopolis, Capitol, and Reform. He died September 19, 1872 in San Francisco.
