Background
Tom Smothers was born on Feb. 2, 1937, and his
brother Dick on Nov. 20, 1938 on Governors Island,
NY; both were students at San Jose State College;
together, they began a song and comedy act leading
to appearances at San Francisco's Purple Onion,
the Blue Angel in New York, and other nightclub
stints at Reno, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, and
elsewhere; co-starred in the television situation
comedy The Smothers Brothers show (1965-66), The
Smothers Brothers comedy hour (1967-69, 1970), The
Smothers Brothers show (1975), and The Smothers
Brothers special and series (1988-89); they both
starred in the Broadway production, I love my
wife; Tom owns a winery in Kenwood, CA, and has
starred in the films The silver bears, Get to know
your rabbit, A pleasure doing business, Serial,
There goes the bride, Pandemonium, and Speed zone;
Dick appeared in the film Casino (1995).
