Background

Scope and content:

The collection cover Peter Koch's work from 1975 through 1996. The Black Stone Press was located in Missoula, Montana from 1974-1978, when it moved to San Francisco. In 1982, the press was renamed Peter Koch, Printer, and in 1984 it moved from San Francisco to Oakland. Following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the press again relocated, this time to Berkeley.

The archive contains works of poets and other authors that Stanford collects, and complements other Special Collections holdings printed by Koch and by other fine presses of the American West. Among its approximately 1250 items are invitations, announcements, business cards and stationery, books, prints, broadsides, and related ephemera. It does not include Montana Gothic, Peter Koch's literary tri-quarterly (or "outlaw literary cowboys chugging absinthe and shooting out streetlights") which was published 1974-78.
