Includes photographs of Allen Ginsberg and other poets, portraits of Pressley Bisland and family, and images used in Barry Silesky's biography: Ferlinghetti, the artist in his time.

Scope and content:

Original installment (--A boxes 1-2): Portraits and personal snapshots of Lawrence Ferlinghetti throughout his life; his family, friends, and associates; views of City Lights Books (and other North Beach locales); as well as photographs from trips to Europe and Nicaragua. Includes photographs of Allen Ginsberg and other poets, portraits of Pressley Bisland and family, and images used in Barry Silesky's biography: Ferlinghetti, the artist in his time.

2017 additions: Portraits and snapshots of Ferlinghetti, his family, friends and associates, with an emphasis on the 1990s to 2010s; a Mississippi trip taken in 2003; a Kirby Smith family photograph album from the 1930s and 1940s; many oversize mounted prints pertaining to Ferlinghetti's career and associates that perhaps decorated the walls of City Lights. Also includes a custom box containing the original drawing for the logo of City Lights Books (OBJ TEMP box 1). Objects include a City Lights Bookstore t-shirt, a Howl cap, an Ambrose Lightship t-shirt, a Piazza Saint Francis/Poets Plaza pin, and a City Lights pin.

The original accession of this collection comprised (approximately) 345 photographic prints, negatives, and 1 pencil drawing housed in 2 boxes, from which 3 digital objects (3 images) were produced by the library for researcher orders. 2017 additions to the collection brought the total to approximately 1,000 photographs, and 2021 additions increased the number to 1,150. Only material received by 1990 has an item listing.
