The bulk of these photographs, used to illustrate news stories on maritime subjects, date from the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. The majority of images are from news agencies or wire services, together with some by local staff photographers. They include photographs of shipwrecks, strandings, vessel launchings, waterfront activities, yacht races, small boat voyages, shipbuilding, and wartime military activiities (chiefly during World War Two and the Korean War.) Documentary information was found in the form of typed or printed captions or newsclippings originally attached to the images. Emphasis is upon maritime activities of the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Coast.
