Background

Scope and content:

The Berkeley and Oakland Businesses and Scenes collection contains 52 photographs and 3 post cards dating from around the turn of the century to the 1930s. The collection contains a miscellany of residences, businesses, street scenes, group portraits, and churches. A large portion of the collection apparently documents the iron ornamentation of many of the featured buildings--perhaps the work of Liberty Ornamental Iron and Wire Works, Inc., which is pictured in at least one photograph. Notable buildings and locations include the Berkeley City Hall, the University of California at Berkeley, the Lutheran Church on Bancroft Way in Berkeley, Shattuck Avenue, Alta Bates Hospital, the residence of C.L. Best, a large Masonic building, and the RKO Golden Gate Theatre. Much specific information relating to many of the photographs--such as location, subject matter, date, or photographer--remains unidentified.

Other areas featured in addition to Berkeley and Oakland include Piedmont, Alameda, Claremont, and San Francisco.

Photographers identified in the collection include Alfred Greene and Max W. Greene. Each of their studios is also pictured.

The collection has been arranged by general location (e.g. Berkeley, Oakland, etc.) when identifiable.
