Richard M. Bohart (1913-2007) served as Professor of Entomology at the University of California, Davis from 1946 to 1979. His Papers contain biographial materials, writings, research materials, and correspondence with researchers, growers, and museums regarding the control of mosquitoes and other pests, loans and identifications of specimens, publications, and other topics.

Scope and content:

The collection contains biographial materials, writings, and several photographs. The majority of the collection is divided into Bohart's research materials and his correspondence with researchers, growers, and museums regarding the control of mosquitoes and other pests, loans and identifications of specimens, publications, and other topics.

Arrangement of the Collection

The collection is arranged in five series: 1. Biographical Materials, 2. Writings, 3. Correspondence, 4. Research Materials, 5. Photographs.

Biographical / historical:

Richard Mitchell Bohart was born in Palo Alto, California on September 28, 1913. He received a B.S. in Entomology and Parasitology (1934), M.S. in Entomology (1935), and PhD in Entomology (1938) from the University of California, Berkeley.

After receiving his PhD, Bohart taught and studied sod pests at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1938 to 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps in 1941, serving as lieutenant commander of the Pacific Area and Washington D.C. He joined the University of California, Davis faculty in 1946 and taught general entomology, medical entomology, systematics, and agricultural entomology. Bohart retired in 1980. In 1983, the UC Davis Entomology Museum was dedicated as the Bohart Museum of Entomology.

His research focused on collecting, identifying, and classifying Strepsiptera mosquitoes and wasps, the twisted-wing parasites (Order Strepsiptera), and the taxonomy of wasps in the families Sphecidae, Chrysididae, and Vespidae.

Bohart passed away on February 1, 2007 in Berkeley, California at the age of 94.

Acquisition information:
The R.M. Bohart Papers were donated in two accessions. The initial accession contained one box of correspondence (1946-1951). In 2005, the Bohart Museum of Entomology transferred the second group of materials to Special Collections.
