Background

Scope and content:

The Monterey Park Collection includes photographs and slides depicting its historic pioneers and including items up to present day. It consists of images related to local business, places, people and events. The photographs and slides were digitalized as part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP) grant from July 2010 to June 2011. It was supported by the California Digital Library under the provision of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in the California by the State Librarian. Items in the Monterey Park collection were selected from different sources including the Monterey Park Historical Society, the Monterey Park Chamber of Commerce and the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library collection with the help of curators from the Monterey Park Museum. Significant holdings include photographs of streets such as Atlantic Blvd, Garvey Avenue and Garfield, photographs of El Encanto, the Midwick County Club, the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library over the years, Laura Scudder the local pioneer of potato chips, Monterey Park City Council in the 1980's, the Ynez School, Barnes Park, Monterey Park City Hall and the Cascades among many others.

Biographical / historical:

The mission of the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library is to meet the cultural, educational, and informational needs of the residents of the City of Monterey Park by providing free and open access to its resources and services. The Monterey Park Chamber of Commerce devotes itself to improving the business climate in the city of Monterey Park. The Monterey Park Historical Society works to encourage and promote the study of history in its relation to Monterey Park and surrounding San Gabriel Valley; to collect and preserve all materials of whatsoever kind which could have any bearing on the City of Monterey Park; the general purpose shall be the discussion of such historical and literacy subjects.

Acquisition information:
The photographs were collected by the staff of Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library, the Monterey Park Historical Society and others as part of the Local History Digital Resources Project grants from the California State Library.

These materials were assembled and digitized as part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project, supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), administered in California by the State Librarian.
