Ralph Steadman (1936- ) was a sketch artist and cartoonist whose work appeared in newspapers and magazines including Punch, Private eye and the Daily telegraph. He also illustrated books including Daisy Ashford's Love and marriage (1965), Richard Ingrams' The tale of driver Grope (1966), and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland (1967). The collection consists of materials by or about Steadman, including books, literary magazines, and postcards written or illustrated by him.

Biographical / historical:

Steadman was born on May 15, 1936 in Wallasey, Cheshire, England; studied at the East Ham Technical College and part-time at the London School of Printing and Graphic Arts; worked for Kemsley Newspapers as a cartoonist; sketches and cartoons have appeared in Punch, Private eye, the Daily telegraph, and other publications; illustrated books, including Daisy Ashford's Love and marriage (1965), Richard Ingrams' The tale of driver Grope (1966), and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland (1967).
