Scope and content:

The collection contains correspondence, articles, lectures, conference, exhibition, and organization files, project files (announcements, articles, binding, budget, correspondence, design, manuscripts, models, photographs, printing, reviews, and related materials) of Carolee Campbell, UCSB alumna, book artist, and founder of Ninja Press (named after her black cat). Among her other credits, Carolee also is an Emmy award winning actress, who appeared on The Doctors in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and an accomplished photographer.

Ninja Press, devoted largely to poetry, published its first work in 1984. In 1988 Carolee, with the Friends of the UCSB Library, published Henry David Thoreau's essay "Walking" in a limited edition of 150 copies. At the time, the Thoreau Edition, directed by Elizabeth Hall Witherell and producing accurate texts of Thoreau's complete works, was located in the library at UCSB. Detailed descriptions of contents, prepared by Carolee Campbell, are included in each box.
