Scope and content:

The collection contains the following series:

  • Biographical / Personal. Includes biographical essays, curriculum vitae, lists of works by HW, PhD dissertation. Box 1.
  • C-MODE. Papers and files relating to the electronic classroom / distance learning. Box 1.
  • Correspondence. Includes related articles, documents, and notes. Box 1.
  • CSDI (Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions) Files. Mainly materials created or collected by HW, especially during the reorganization periods of the late 1960s and mid 1970s. Includes transcripts of interviews by HW. Boxes 2-4.
  • Institute for Higher Studies [IHS]. Institute created by HW in the 1970s to, as described in the HIS publicity, "... engage in the study of the structures and systems that underlie and influence basic biolocial and social processes in order to arrive at policies that may provide solutions to pressing problem" and to disseminate findings resulting from those studies. Included a number of resident and non-resident fellows formerly associated with the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. Box 5.
  • Journal of Social and Biological Structures. Book review, publisher, and editorial correspondence, ca. 1980-1987. HW was chief editor of the journal, along with James F. Danielli. Box 5.
  • Research / Project / Subject Files. Includes related correspondence, notes, old writings on a subject, new thoughts and ideas, articles by others - much of the work through the 1970s done while HW was at the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. Boxes 6-21.
  • Writings by HW. Includes typescript (many with corrections) and printed copies of articles (some for The Center Magazine), papers, chapters of works, contributions to edited works, speeches, many undated, along with some related notes, research materials, and reviews; much of this done while at the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. Boxes 22-26.
  • Audio-Visual. Contains small number of audio tapes - open reel, audiocassettes, and audograms (disks).

Biographical / historical:

The following information is drawn primarily from the Harvey Wheeler section of the CSDI Collection (Mss 18):

Born: John Harvey Wheeler, Waco, Texas, Oct. 17, 1918; died: Santa Barbara, California, September 6, 2004. CSDI: Staff, 1961-1964; Fellow/Senior Fellow, 1965-1975; Program Director, 1969-1975. Taught political science at Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Washington & Lee University before coming to the Center. Publications include: Fail-Safe (novel, with Eugene Burdick, 1962), Harvey Wheeler on the Restoration of Politics (CSDI Occasional Paper, 1965), Harvey Wheeler on the Rise and Fall of Liberal Democracy (CSDI Occasional Paper, 1966), Democracy in a Revolutionary Era: The Political Order Today (1968), The Politics of Revolution (1971), Beyond the Punitive Society; Operant Conditioning: Social and Political Aspects (1973), and Goethe and the Sciences (editor, with Frederick Amrine and Francis J. Zucker, 1987).
