Description
This collection comprises the records and publications of the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) at the University of California,
Irvine (UCI) from 1979 to 2005. Some materials document activities that were co-sponsored with other Vietnamese American
associations.
Background
Founded in 1979, the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) or Hoi Sinh-Vien Viet
Nam tai UCI "aims to preserve and promote Vietnamese culture at the University of California, Irvine and the surrounding community
by providing programs and support for students to establish a common ground for cultural awareness." VSA thrives at UCI,
which has one of the largest college populations of Vietnamese American students, and Orange County is home to the largest
Vietnamese community in the United States. VSA sponsors cultural events, conferences, recreational sports teams, a choir,
a traditional dance team, a modern dance team, and a lion dance team, also known as Gio Nam (Southern Wind).
