The Stanford Inn opened in 1898 on the site of the present art gallery. In 1917, the inn moved to the site where the School of Education is now located, and in 1922, the inn made its final move to land east of Encina Gym and became ROTC headquarters. The inn had a checkered financial history, with governance and operation turnovers every few years. The inn was student operated from 1898 until 1903 when it was taken over by a cooperative association.
