The Chang Li-sheng 張厲生 papers (1916-2006) document Chang's career in the Kuomintang (KMT) (1930s-1960s) and as ambassador to Japan (1959-1963), as well as personal materials relating to his family. Contains letters, biographical data, printed matter, and photographs, relating to political conditions in China and Taiwan. Includes a memoir by Hsiao-yuen de Groot, daughter of Chang Li-sheng.

Scope and content:

The papers consist of correspondence with Kuomintang (KMT) leaders, photograph albums, and newspaper clippings relating to Chang's political career in the KMT (1930s-1960s) and role as ambassador to Japan (1959-1963). Contains personal materials such as correspondence with his children, Chang's calligraphy, views on Confucian ethics, and printed matter, as well as a memoir titled "Who Was L.S. Chang?," written by Hsiao-yuen de Groot, daughter of Chang Li-sheng.

Biographical / historical:

Chang Li-sheng 張厲生 (Zhang Lisheng 张厉生) (1901-1971), was an early Kuomintang (KMT) party member who joined in the 1920s and served as a Chinese political leader from the 1930s-1960s. He served as Vice Premier of the Republic of China (1948, 1950-1954), Secretary General of the KMT Central Executive Committee (1954-1959), and Taiwanese ambassador to Japan (1959-1963).
