Scope and content:

Coronado Public Library's photograph collection includes images of Coronado and other areas of San Diego County from the late 1800s to 2005 that are of historical interest. Images document early aviation and the United States Navy; commercial, residential, and public buildings, including businesses and restaurants (notably the San Diego and Coronado Ferry Company); the Coronado Fire Department, public schools and public art such as the Ramos Martinez murals at the Coronado Public Library; scenes from Tent City, Glorietta Bay and the Tea Gardens of George T. Marsh. The map collection includes both maps and charts of Southern California and the San Diego Bay dating from 1849 to 1968 (notably, a printed topographical sketch used to determine the initial point of boundary between the United States and Mexico as surveyed by the United States Commission in 1849). These photographs and maps were assembled from various larger collections in the Coronado Public Library's archives. The photograph collection includes approximately 11,000 negatives taken for the local newspaper, the Coronado Eagle & Journal, from 1998 to 2004. Collection topics within the archives include: Coronado, United States Navy, Hotel del Coronado, Coronado Library, Coronado Fire Department, artist Alfredo Ramos Martinez, maps of Coronado and San Diego County, and charts of San Diego Bay.

This collection was created by Coronado Public Library staff in 2008-2009 for the Local History Digital Resources Project. Processing information:

These photographs and maps were assembled from various photograph collections and the map collection in the Coronado Public Library's archives. They were digitized in order to provide broader access to the cultural and social history of Coronado. A foundational virtual collection of digital image objects was created, which are available to the public through the California Digital Library's (CDL) Calisphere website (http://www.calisphere.universityofcalifornia.edu/).

The project was part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP), a multi-year program supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Leveraging the infrastructure of the CDL in partnership with Califa and Infopeople, the LHDRP explores a model to aggregate, preserve, and to provide permanent public access to local history materials maintained by California cultural heritage institutions via a single state-wide online access point. Project activities spanned August 2008 through July 2009. Activities included description and digitization of over 200 items included in the project. Digital objects were created and cataloged using CONTENTdm, a digital asset management tool shared by LHDRP participants. The cataloging conforms to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Objects specifications for descriptive and copyright metadata.

Digitization was performed by Northern Micrographics using flatbed scanners. For each physical item, three digital image files were created: a TIFF master, a JPEG access image, and GIF thumbnail image. Digital image files conform to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Images. The items selected for digitization represent a sampling of the Coronado Library archival collection.
