The Marine Science Institute (MSI) was established in 1969 at UC Santa Barbara, and is the focus for marine, coastal zone, and freshwater research; marine policy studies; and educational outreach in marine science. MSI administers and supports research projects involving faculty, professional researchers, technical staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students from 14 disciplines.
It is committed to fostering innovative and significant research, to promoting effective stewardship, and to sharing the exciting discoveries of the world's oceans. Seven of the 32 Natural Reserve sites in the University of California system are managed by MSI and continue to be available for university level instruction, research and public outreach.
The origins of marine science at UCSB date to 1935, before the college was a part of the University of California system. Activity around the discipline grew and by 1956 the campus had established its first marine biological lab. Originally housed in a trailer at UCSB's Campus Point, the current Marine Science Research Building became home to MSI in 2004.
