Martin Janis first opened his gallery on Ventura Blvd. before moving it to 710 North La Cienega Blvd. at the time that street was the most fashionable address for art dealers in Los Angeles; he is the brother of New York art dealer Sidney Janis.
Expanded Biographical NoteThe Martin Janis Gallery was operated by the brother of new York art dealer Sidney Janis. It was evidently first located on Ventura Boulevard, then moved to 710 North La Cienega Boulevard, at the time that street was the most fashionable address for art dealers in Los Angeles.
The papers consist primarily of clippings from prominent magazines and newspapers. Most of these were, or are now, indexed. For researchers, the catalogs and small amounts of correspondence are of most value, although most correspondence is routine or is in the nature of postcard notes.
Also interesting is the small amount of gallery ephemera - invitations and announcements - dating from the late 1930s and 1940s in New York. These include several nicely printed announcements for shows of Tchelitchew, Calder, etc. for shows at the Pierre Matisse Gallery, Durlacher Bros., and the Julien Levy Gallery, among others.
