The Collection contains the following series:

Correspondence (Boxes 1-19). Incoming and outgoing., ca. 1934-1979.

Organizational and Administrative Files (Boxes 19-20). Includes various boards, committees, conferences, programs, projects, and studies.

Research (Boxes 21-22). Includes journals (daily record of activities); field notebooks (geological observations and professional activities); and photo notebooks (logs of photos taken).

Subject Files (Boxes 23-25). Includes research and project notes, maps, some drafts of papers, along with related printed material.

Teaching (Boxes 26-27). Mainly Harvard and UCSB, with class/lecture notes, syllabi, exams, and related materials.

Writings (Boxes 27-34). Monographs (incl. correspondence, notes, drafts, editorial files, photos, and other illustrations, reviews, and related materials) and papers (reports and articles, many co-authored, also some talks, reviews and letters to editors, and some research files; includes drafts of papers/articles and related correspondence, b/w photographs and negatives, research notes, and copies of articles by others).

Photographs. (Box 35): Mainly b/w prints and 35 mm negatives; a few color prints and color slides. Aerial Photos (b/w, Naval Operations, with index). (Boxes 36-37): Aerial photos have been transferred to the UCSB Libraries, Map and Imagery Laboratory (MIL).

Biographical / historical:

Preston Cloud was born in 1912 and educated at George Washington and Yale universities. He worked for many years with the U.S. Geological Survey and taught at Harvard, the University of Minnesota, Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, UCLA, and the University of California Santa Barbara. He was internationally renowned for his work in paleontology, geology, biogeology, and environmental studies, and was the recipient of many awards, including the 1976 Penrose Medalist of the Geological Society of America. He died in 1991.
