Scope and content:

The collection mainly contains invitations, programs, articles, reviews, and other items relating to the 1949 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Bicentennial Celebration, which were collected by Goethe - Faust scholar Stuart Pratt Atkins (1914-2000), UCSB professor of Germanic, Slavic, and Semitic Studies from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s. Atkins previously had retired from Harvard University.

Included is a program for Lotte Lehmann's recital of lieder based on Goethe texts, given at UC Berkeley, and a photograph of Albert Schweitzer and an autograph by Thornton Wilder in an Aspen program. Atkins also donated a number of monographs to UCSB Special Collections, mainly German literature, which have been cataloged separately.
